08.27.08 Ride Report: the rabbit chasing skippy

Skippy went easy on me this morning. We met at Highland and Santa Rosa at 6:00 AM. I rode from Shell. Levi no-showed (again!). We rolled Turri. Ben slowed down when it was apparent I wasn't going to take his bait. Then we had a good ole time talking and praying. After Turri loop we climbed Prefumo and then descended into See Canyon and then split there in Avila, each heading home. He waited in all the standard places. My odo showed 52. Skippy must have had close to the same.

I had cramps for the first time today. . . not those cramps. . . leg cramps. Never had them before. I'm guessing its some lack in my diet of late. Jens or Coach, have any thoughts?

I'm frustrated at how quickly I've lost my groove. Off the road most of July and half of August, but its not like I wasn't riding. Pretty consistent and hard mountain through July. A week of no cardio during moving madness and then a week of running at Hume. And yet, its like I've never ridden 50 miles before? What's up with that? Kinda got me depressed. Any thoughts?

So, the Lighthouse C. is on the horizon for me. I've got a long way to go, but Doc says he's going to get me there.

Torque's race is complete

I got a call from Chad today as he was on the road after leaving the venue.
170 miles behind him..........here's the short story:
Day 1- Prologue was kinda weird. It didn't count for time, only for positioning at the start of stage I. The wierd thing is that is was a group start and positioning didn't matter.....? Anyways, he said it was good for aclimating.
Day 2- Chad was in the lead around the half way point and......bonk! Turns out too many electrolites is a bad thing. He said he lost over 20 minutes in the last 20 miles .
Day 3- Chad takes the stage and gains back a little time heading into the last day. Only down side is that somewhere along the way his shifting became a bit out of whack and had a few hitches in it.
Day 4- Turns out the bad shifting was due to a broken frame!!!! Therefore causing him to limp along(including walking up a major climb) until where there was the specialized warranty guy with an s-works stumpy ready to trade him out. He road the stumpy the rest of the way home.

He finished the race in fourth and felt confident he would have taken the last stage and potentially contended for the overall if the bike issues did not occur.

I would say it was a pretty impressive effort, especially being the first time out in an event like this. From what I understand, all the others in his race are very experienced in this type of event.

Torque Update_Stage II

Our very own CHAD THEULE TOOK THE STAGE WIN TODAY!!!!!!!!!
He is still in 5^th place but gained some time.
It will take a strong effort to gain enough time tomorrow, but he definitely increased his chances of getting to the podium.
(I am assuming podium is top 3?)

His buddy Frederic took second again today and is 2^nd going into the final day! (Sportsmen 40+)

Martin Family Cycling - Mammoth Lakes, CA

In the mix of fishing, hiking, and having a blast in Mammoth Lakes, CA, had a moment to ride some of my favorite terrain with my mom and dad in tow.

My mom and dad are the folks responsible for getting us all into the riding scene. Thanks for that - it's been an enjoyable ride for sure!

A young woman roadie passed us during a pit stop and my mom could not resist the chance to pull her back in full TT mode. Mom is 66 years old and putting the hammer down. Victim in sight!!!


On the way back on US 395 with the Sherwins in the backgorund. Gods handiwork is something to see...

It looks like Chad is in the “Open” Class, not the Elite.

He posted a great time today and is in 3^rd.

I think the longer distance stages will favor him going forward…..

Shorty but goody!

Meet at Highland and Santa Rosa at 0700 hours.  We will do the Turri loop nice and smooth.  Torque is tapering for his race and we'll make this a send-off ride with a light atmosphere and good fellowship!

Dog Days of Summer

C'mon guys - the season does not end until September/October!

Lets see some more cycling chatter! Chad is going big and we need to show some enthusiasm.

Cycling Season has been a good one to date. San Sebastian won by Valverde, Le Tour by Sastre, and the Olympic RR by Sammy Sanchez. Guess Spain has really got it going now. And I am not buying in on the crap that the one positive by a spanish female Olympic Roadie taints any of the previous mentions!

Don't let the late dog days of summer wear you out. Keep it going. Also, Mondays and Wednesday at my house is my only weekday rides. Short but fun. Make it if you ever can. Weekends have been sparse but enjoying riding when I can.

Going to Mammoth this week and bringing a medly of toys including my Tarmac for a few jaunts at elevation. Will be hiking, fishing, and swimming like a madman with the kids and the wifey.

Just thought I would throw some fresh stuff on the blog to get the stale smell out of the air...

rabbits are moving

Great ride this morning . . . .hopefully Torque doesn't post a picture of me walking a section of Dairy Creek. Long story.

Anyway, we're moving all weekend (and probably next weekend, too), if anyone wants to swing by and pitch in for an hour or two. No pressure.
