Saturday Road Ride - 2 routes

Any of you on the fence about coming out with us, jump in! Tomorrow we will have two routes. One that is shorter and mello and another that will be longer and incorporate some big climbs. You pick. Here's how it works......
We will roll out, everyone together at a mello pace, down to Avila-Port San Luis. The split will happen on the way back. Those wanting to keep it tame will all head back together along the frontage road. Those wanting to get their climb on can by going route 2 = Squire Canyon. There are two climbs to tackle......one is "The Knob"....... and the other is "Baron Cyn"(This one really hurts!).

We want to have this group be a win/win for all. Having option A and Option B we hope will create great fellowship and a fun ride for all levels. Come one come all!!!!

I know we have one new guy jumping in tomorrow for his virgin road ride.......Uncle Ricco! (Gotta show to know who that is)

Ride Report: 07.29.09

This morning was great. Good to see Tom Israel, Byron Toby, Rick Wolfe and Kevin Christian join the pack today.

Started with 10 to the 41 turnoff. 6 continued up, 4 turned around and did Turri home. Ben is the hero of this group for virtually riding without a seat all the way home.

New guy Kevin just thrashed the rest of us up the 41. Dude is strong! Brian and Todd hung with him the longest, but then he got away from even them.

By the crest, the group was split 4-2. Byron and Tom hung together and established their own pace. Meanwhile, Kevin just kept pushing the rest of us. We went 41 to the freeway then east through a bunch of country roads to Santa Margarita.

The rest of us took turns looking exhausted, but he sure looked unfazed.

I rolled up to my truck at Grace at 9:02. Great ride.

I'm planning to do the 41 to Cuesta Grade again tomorrow, Wednesday, July 29.

6:00 at church. In the shower by 9.

Steady conistent role tomorrow with limited stops. Those who want to do less can roll to the 41 and back, about 30 miles, instead of 50.

Wed Road with Jens

Planning a Wed Am road ride for early birds :)  I am going at 6 am to do short course Atascadero 50.  Will meet at Santa Rosa/Foothill at 6 am... out coast to 41, up 41, south west side atascadero to Camino Real then to grade and down.  About 48 miles,  should take a little over 2.5  hours. Will go medium tempo.  Will give race report on Steve's ride at Red River Gorge UCI  Jr. Stage race in Kentucky to anyone interested....  Go Andy Schleck!

Heads Up All

Hey guys:

Really appreciate everyones enthusiasm in cycling, particularly as a group. We all understand there is a real risk but sometimes we need some of the realities so that we don't become complacent in our riding endeavors. Take care, pick your routes, ride defensively, and pay attention and you will likely be just fine.

Several riding communities, particularly one that I know has had several serious and fatal accidents very recently.

A few others riders hurt included a friend of my sister who was side swiped and ended up with a broken leg and a cousin who was mildly bruised with a driver mirror.

The rider death above is a tragedy. My brother, who recently began to know the rider who was killed, is distraught since he was growing very found of his newly developed friendship with this belgian transplant who has a wife at home expecting their first child. He and Sean were out ripping it up on the Tuesday night ride typically and Sean missed this weeks run and is in pain thinking about the family and the loss of a new relationship that ended too quickly. Sean is thankful there was not many more killed in this ride since it is typically 30 plus riders and not just 10. A positive is that he was seeking local Christian churches in his new home area and it appears he will recieve a warm life celebration and funeral service at Grace Baptist Church. A church I grew up with.

This post is not intended to be a downer but simply to be a reality check to remember the important parts of cycling; skills, awareness, riding smarts, and the importance of prayer and praise of Gods will in all of this. Be safe, pray for this unknown family, and my hope is that this fallen cyclist is in Paradise!

Oregon Ride Pics_07.08.09

I have been in Bend, Oregon all week, visiting Ricky Stilson (AKA - Ricdiculous). He is moving to SLO at the end of the month so we are here for a last hurrah visit and to help get them started on the move effort. He will be joining our crew and jumping in to the riding thing....cant wait!
I brought the bikes up and all they have really done is look good in his garage.....until today. Todays ride more than made up for it as I went on the most scenic ride I have ever experienced. There is a huge network of trails just 5 minutes from his house. Here are some pics.......
This is Brian Merrit. Small world........he works at the bike shop about 100 yds away from Ricky's house........He grew up in OC a few miles away from me and knows many of the same people I grew up with. He moved to to help a church plant. Brian was kind enough to be the bike tour guide

Tumalo Falls.....this is the main fall.....amazingly beautiful setting



The trail crossed the water many times. This one was the biggest crossing log and had a rail. We managed to stay mostly dryOne of the other 14 falls along the trail!!!!


This section of trail rose the heart rate a bitTowards the top......Mt Bachelor in the background. We did get into a couple areas of snow along the way.
Ricky took his first substaintial fall.....love the attitude......he'll fit right in


So one thing is for sure.......altitude hurts!
Another thing for sure.......if you have any thoughts of planning a trip, Bend OR should be a strong consideration. The town is alot like SLO and the scenery is incredible.
Nothing doing tomorrow really, but going fishing on Friday!
Wish I could be involved in the rides/gathering going on there, but not complaining about being here either. Have fun, we'll see you next week.

Friday Coffee Ride / Gavin Payne Le Tour Event

Corner of Broad / Tank Farm around 7:40-7:50. Rolling with big group. I have heard it called Benson's ride...a la Eric Benson from Art's.

9:00ish - Gavin Payne (local realtor extraordainre) is hosting a Tour event at the old Uptown...now Black Horse Cafe on Higuera near Firestone. He does this annually and it usually has a good showing of cyclists, his past and current clients, and friends. Open house setting. Black Horse is very biker friendly too.

I think Friday is the first real showdown between Lance and Alberto. Should be a great stage to watch.

Hope to see some of you there. For ride and/or coffee.

TdF Cardio Challenge

Rabbit had a brainchild yesterday. . . .

I'm committed to doing at least 45 minutes of some cardio for every day/stage of the Tour de France . . . biking, running, whatever. On the days they rest, I rest. On the days they ride, I do something for at least 45 minutes.

Here's how its gone for me so far. . . .

Saturday: MTB at Lopez with Jeff Martin at 6:30 AM
Sunday: ran my hilly street for 45 at 3:00 PM
Monday: rode road to Cayucos with Mike Grainger at 6:30 AM
Tuesday: ran my hilly street at 5:10 AM
Wednesday: plan to ride Prefumo to Old Port at 12:15 (see last post)

Lots of the tour still to go. Not too late to jump in. I think Torque is in. Anyone else?

SB Ride Report

Great ride to Santa Barbara this past week, the second annual SLO/SB ride.  Les grand depart (tour talk...) occurred around 6am; myself, Tim, Chad, Ben and Todd took the start energetic and looking forward to a great day riding down the coast.  We rode in overcast and drippy skies making our first stop in Guadalupe, we weren't able to stop too long though because Chad kept asking the question "why are we stopping so much and for so long?"  From Quadalupe we head south to Black road where we ascended the Casmalia grade, Tim was heard at the summit proclaiming "that wasn't nearly as hard as last year! Let's go guys! Yahoo..." From there we passed the gates of Vandenburg and the rollers into Lompoc where Chad was once again heard saying "are we stopping again??"  Starbucks was our host in Lompoc creating a good rest and refueling for the second half of the ride.  The sun came out and we slid into each others slipstream, well truth be told we slid into super domestique Todd's slipstream who took pulls for hours at a time! Tim took a short pull at the front (the downhill section into Gaviota) and claimed that he had done the majority of the work all the way from Lompoc.  I thought I heard him say "the truth doesn't set you free, pulling on a descent sets you free..." Ha! We off-ramped it into the Gaviota rest stop and by this time Chad looked incensed that we were making our third stop of the day and said "why can't we just keep riding?"  We hit the road going south on 101 taking big pulls (actually we all pulled for 4-5 minutes with Todd pulling 15-20 minutes -- dude worked the front!).  Ben then took a big pull on the front (his mentor Todd set a huge standard) but when he faded off the front his face had that all to familiar hollow look of pre-bonking.  We exited at Hollister/Winchester and took the foothill route into SB, Tim groaned every time we rounded a corner and he saw any level of upward pitch. We hit State St. in downtown SB for our victory entrance, the sun was warm, a light breeze and the ride was done! 111 miles, 19 mph ave.  Chad said "let's ride to Camarillo!" everyone else said "let's get off our bikes!"  We jumped into the pool/hot tub at the Harbor View Hotel and immediately began to talk about the days events -- good times for sure.
