Le Tour CSC v. Cadel - It's about talent and teamwork

There is little doubt that Cadel is favored for the GC. What is in doubt, is if his team equipped to handle a serious beating by CSC...

Lessons from yesterdays stage and the previous half:

1. Don't be over aggressive and expend needless energy if your goal is GC. Valverde and to some lessor extent Kirchen demonstrated this. They did way to much attacking including stages that should have been reserved for sprinters. Great riders, strong teams, and possibly poor decisions. I believe however that Kirchen's goal is to do well but to also have worn the jersey for the team. But Valverdes decision was GC from the beginning so his situation is worse.

2. The Tour is won by teams with one goal in mind. Or maybe two in this case when you consider Schleck and Sastre. Sastre is a good tour rider but Frank Schleck is the real deal and totally world class. You saw this on Hautacam yesterday. If it were not for the Sanier Duval duo at the front, he would have won the stage. Nonetheless happy for Peipoli who is getting close to ending his career in pro cycling. CSC showed it with style yesterday and Jens (the real one) has been talking about it for days. He has clearly been stating watch what is about to happen... He saved himself for yesterdays role and he blasted the peloton to pieces on the Tourmalet. Up the road in the valley between the climbs was the second in the series of CSC arsenals - the world time trial champion Cancellara was there to put down the speed and went full TT mode to the climb and again eliminated the leg power of many of the climbers. Sastre was next mid climb bringing Schleck and a select group forward. Then Frank hit the gas! Perfectly executed and now second on GC. If they continue with this power and teamwork, Cadel and team lotto is in some serious trouble to protect it...

Lotto should just give up the jersey and stay close and let CSC do the work and hold the burden until the final TT and Cadel should go ballistic. On paper, he can seriously better Sastre and Schleck in the final 53km TT.

Even with all these predictions, anything can happen. Never let the guard down.

Congrats to Cadel and an award for a serious journey in trying to wear yellow. Enjoy it, because you will have to work to keep it!

Vive Le Tour!
