SCNCA Masters Road Race Championships Race Report

Well actually a nice day in Bako today.  About 85 with only mild wind.  Started the race with around 50 in the field at the 45+ championship.  Carpooled with Blake my solo teamate.  Usual suspects there with Amgen in full force.  Started hard as usual with a very early break of 2 riders.  They stayed away most of the first lap with about 1 minute gap.  1st time up the climb was tempo riding with some accelerations at the top but was able to stay with group. The group dropped about 1/3 of field on first climb.  Descent was fast and technical.  Some sketchy descenders so tried to stay at the front.  Caught the break about mid race.  Stayed med pace until the 2nd climb.  Pace picked up with several off the front.  Thurlow went with another teamate and gapped.  2 more behind them.  I stayed in the main group of about 10.  My teammate Blake made hard effort on the last little part of the climb and bridged to the 2nd group, didn't go with him as didn't want to bring any more up to him.  Went over the top with about 10 behind them in the remnant peleton.  The descent again was sketchy with one guy off the road.  Front 2 Amgen with Thurlow stayed away and won.  Blake's group stayed away from our chasing remnant peleton.  I sat in the last 10 miles since I had a teammate up front and finished our sprint 5th.  Was 11th overall, Blake came in 5th and on the podium!!!.  Great day of racing.  Started the season with this being one of my A races and set a goal of top 10 finish.  I'm satisfied with 11th!
62 miles,  about 4000 feet climbing,  avg speed 22.7.   2 bottles H20, 1 bottle Cytomax, 4 gels.
Ciao
Jens

Pretty sure the only thing you could have done better was represent with a OneSource Jersey on your back. Word on the street is that the jersey is worth at least a couple spots......
Nice work Jens! We missed you on our Santa Rosa ride, hopefully you can join us this week...?

Sounds like the same race to me!
My other "A races" for this year are the Sisquoc RR/SLO Criterium weekend in July and San Ardo RR in August. Both local races. "A races" generally guide your training cycles so you build and then taper for these. May see you Wed AM. Will see how the week shapes up and the ride plans develop.

Congrats David. Solid ride. Nice that you share a bit of the tactics. Never know when the role will reverse and hope your team mate chooses to return the good will. Crazy that Thurlow never stops. This guy will never give up. I remember hearing about him arriving at the Simi Ride in the early 90's and hearing how he road everyones legs off. You are riding with some very serious riders. Talk with you soon.
